The illustration captures the scale of the architectural complex with its massive colonnades reflected on the banks. The composition puts into perspective the grandeur of the Egyptian remains against the contemporary dwellings of the period, creating a precious visual document on the state of the site around 1838.

David Roberts, a renowned painter for his explorations in the Middle East, produced this set for encyclopedic purposes. The intention was to faithfully render the atmosphere and structure of the monuments of Thebes. The linework emphasizes the hierarchy of architectural elements, from obelisks to pylons, testifying to the romantic style combined with the author's topographical precision.

This ancient illustration is aimed at those wishing to enrich their space with scholarly iconography. It constitutes a base for iconographic study on 19th-century Egyptian iconography.
