The illustration highlights the majesty of the ruins, with its Corinthian columns still standing, and restores the atmosphere of a landscape where nature has reclaimed its rights. The composition, chosen by the artist to capture a rare torrent formed by the Ilissus, combines architectural grandeur with the power of an ephemeral natural phenomenon.

Taken from the work Views in Greece (1821), this plate is the result of the documentary work of Edward Dodwell, an archaeologist and draftsman who traveled through Greece in the early 19th century. His work aimed to create a precise visual record of the condition of ancient monuments, combining quasi-scientific rigor with an artistic sensitivity that foreshadows romanticism. Each engraving is a historical document on pre-independence Greece.

This print is intended for lovers of classical history, archaeology, and historical landscapes. It offers a window into the past, inviting contemplation of the fallen grandeur of Athens.
