cyanotype-illustration-vintage-schizonema-dillwynii
Naturalist illustration Schizonema Dillwynii by Anna Atkins

This reproduction represents the species Schizonema Dillwynii, as immortalized by Anna Atkins in the mid-19th century. The graphic plate exposes the delicate filaments of this alga in the form of a cyanotype, where light outlines the subject against a deep azure blue background. This direct contact capture method ensures a faithful restitution of the proportions and structural fineness of the plant.
The work is extracted from the encyclopedic collection Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Between 1843 and 1853, Atkins rigorously documented the diversity of British algae, making history in scientific publishing. Her work is distinguished by a methodical approach that prefigures contemporary documentary photography, while retaining great visual power.
This botanical illustration is aimed at collectors seeking historical testimonies of the fusion between art and science. It lends itself to a sober decorative use, allowing one to appreciate the intrinsic beauty of plant forms and the chromatic singularity of Prussian blue.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/4730/2989/files/cyanotype-illustration-vintage-schizonema-dillwynii-29-7x42-cm-A3.jpg?v=1777735335
