planche-naturaliste-rorqual-commun-charles-d-orbigny
Naturalist plate of the Common Rorqual by Charles d'Orbigny

This reproduction of an engraving from the Romantic era illustrates a common rorqual (Balaenoptera rorqual) stranded on a steep shore. The dramatic composition, including cliffs, seabirds, and small human silhouettes in the background, emphasizes the monumental scale of the cetacean. The shades of black and grey powerfully restore the skin texture and imposing morphology of this marine mammal.

The illustration is taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle by Charles d'Orbigny, published between 1841 and 1849. This corpus is considered one of the pinnacles of 19th-century naturalist publishing. The plate testifies to the era's growing interest in large marine mammals.

This print is aimed at collectors of marine themes and history of science enthusiasts. Its presence in a living or workspace offers a window onto ocean exploration and the discovery of sea giants. It constitutes a precious visual testimony on how large cetaceans were perceived and represented by past naturalists.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/4730/2989/files/planche-naturaliste-rorqual-commun-charles-d-orbigny-40x50-cm.jpg?v=1777639061
