illustration-plaine-olympie-grece-edward-dodwell
Plain of Olympia and the Alpheus River, Antique Engraving by Edward Dodwell

This reproduction of an antique engraving depicts the plain of Olympia, cradle of the ancient Games, crossed by the winding bed of the Alpheus River. The illustration highlights a vast and bare landscape, where only a few scattered remains of the temple of Jupiter Olympius still stand. The treatment of light and the composition of the landscape underline the past grandeur of the site, contrasting with its state at the beginning of the 19th century.

This plate is taken from the collection Views in Greece (1821) by the antiquarian Edward Dodwell. It reflects his quasi-archaeological approach, aiming to document with precision the state of major Greek sites. More than a simple picturesque view, this engraving is a historical document on the topography of Olympia before the major excavations that would reveal its buried treasures.

This print is intended for lovers of ancient history, mythology, and archaeology. In decoration, it evokes the evocative power of ruins and the memory of sacred places. It constitutes a choice piece for a cultured interior, inviting contemplation of a landscape steeped in history and legends.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/4730/2989/files/illustration-plaine-olympie-grece-edward-dodwell-30x40-cm.jpg?v=1790777858
https://www.berticdesigns.fr/en/products/plain-of-olympia-and-the-alpheus-river-antique-engraving-by-edward-dodwell
