The plate highlights two types of traditional watercraft operating in a coastal marine environment, where the silhouette of the islands can be seen in the background. The chromatic study favors natural tones of beige and blue, emphasizing the structure of the triangular sails and the waterline of these Oceanian vessels.

The original work was created by the artists of the expedition of the corvette Astrolabe (1826–1829), under the direction of Jules Dumont d'Urville. This scientific mission aimed to comprehensively document the cultures and navigation techniques of the Pacific in the 19th century. The precision of the line work testifies to the ethnographic and naturalist intention specific to this major encyclopedic work.

This ancient illustration constitutes a historical testimony to Polynesian and Melanesian maritime heritage. As a decorative or collectors' item, it fits perfectly into an interior seeking a cabinet of curiosities or maritime exploration atmosphere. Its iconographical value makes it a prime piece for the study of South Pacific naval traditions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/4730/2989/files/planche-pirogues-voile-viti-vanikoro-astrolabe-42x59-4-cm-A2.jpg?v=1777667510
https://www.berticdesigns.fr/en/products/plate-of-sailing-canoes-from-the-viti-and-vanikoro-islands-astrolabe
