His bold compositions, blending dynamism with meticulous detail, celebrate the beauty of mountains, rivers, and scenes of everyday life.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), an iconic figure of ukiyo-e, was born in Edo (now Tokyo) into a modest family. Introduced to drawing at a young age by his father, a mirror maker, at the age of 19 he joined the studio of Katsukawa Shunshō, famous for his portraits of kabuki actors. Hokusai adopted many artist names throughout his career, illustrating his constant need for renewal and his obsession with drawing.

Recognized for transforming the art of printmaking, he introduced landscape as a central subject, moving away from traditional themes. His works combine the aesthetics of ukiyo-e with influences from Chinese painting, resulting in dynamic and innovative compositions. He was also interested in shunga (erotic prints) and scenes from everyday life, exploring a wide variety of styles and techniques.

His masterpiece, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji , of which The Great Wave off Kanagawa is the most famous print, embodies his mastery of movement, contrast, and perspective. During his lifetime, Hokusai produced tens of thousands of works, moving 93 times in his pursuit of artistic perfection. He died in 1849, leaving an unparalleled legacy that continues to influence world art.
