2026 Calendar: One Thousand Varieties of Butterflies by Kamisaka Sekka

This 2026 calendar features a selection of reproductions from the famous series Chō senshu, illustrated by Kamisaka Sekka in 1903. Each month reveals a different plate featuring a multitude of butterflies in various shades, ranging from orange to purple, against neutral or textured backgrounds. The overall composition highlights the rich iconographic heritage of this major naturalistic and decorative collection in the history of Japanese prints.

The original work is part of the Rimpa movement, of which Sekka was one of the last great masters. Published in Kyoto, this collection aimed to provide ornamental models for artisans and designers of the period. The illustrations are characterized by refined shapes, sophisticated color fields, and a bold layout that breaks away from strict realism to prioritize formal elegance and pigment harmony.

This calendar serves as a documentary and decorative object to appreciate the art of Kamisaka Sekka on a daily basis. It is intended for lovers of graphic arts and naturalistic themes, offering a structured vision of early twentieth-century Japanese aesthetics. Each plate can be appreciated for its historical and artistic value throughout the year.
