This botanical plate reproduction depicts the Candolle Rose, identified by Redouté in 1827 as a variety of the Alpine Rose (Rosa alpina). The illustration focuses on the morphological characteristics of the flower and the structure of its thorny stem.
The author, a renowned painter and engraver, deploys his technique to render the strength of the naturalistic line. The accent is placed on the precision of the leaf appendages and the chromatics of the petals, characteristics of the rose studies that made Pierre-Joseph Redouté world-famous.
Intended to enrich a documentary collection, this reproduction of an ancient engraving bears witness to the evolution of rose taxonomy. It offers a clear and detailed reading of the plant, faithful to the scientific standards of the era.
