This reproduction of a scientific plate features two specimens of chelonians: the Mauritanian tortoise and the European pond turtle. The illustration offers a comparative study between a terrestrial species and an aquatic species, complemented by elements of vegetation that place the reptiles in their environment. The work on shell textures and skin patterns bears witness to rigorous observation, using shades of brown, yellow, and green.
The original work comes from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, published during the 1840s. This encyclopedic corpus represents one of the pinnacles of French naturalist engraving, where each plate served as a support for the description of species. The visual hierarchy and period scientific annotations reflect the state of knowledge in herpetology in the 19th century.
Intended to enrich a sober and elegant decoration, this reproduction finds its place among collectors and lovers of natural history. It allows one to appreciate the fascinating diversity of turtles through a unique artistic and documentary prism. This image constitutes a timeless testimony of human curiosity towards the animal world and its varied forms.
