Ancient illustration of moths and lepidoptera by Ernst Haeckel

This reproduction of a scientific lithograph features various species of moths, a group of nocturnal lepidoptera. The illustration focuses on the unfolding of the wings, revealing the finesse of the patterns and the complexity of the morphological structures of these butterflies. The drawing work, centered on sober tones, emphasizes the delicacy of the scales and the variety of shapes present in this insect order.

Initially integrated into Ernst Haeckel's visual encyclopedia, Kunstformen der Natur, this plate illustrates the transition between entomological observation and artistic expression. Haeckel uses the symmetry of butterflies to demonstrate his theories on universal morphology, creating compositions that subsequently inspired numerous Art Nouveau designers and artists.

A true testimony to 19th-century entomology, this image is ideal for decorating a space with elegance and sobriety. It invites careful observation of the small details of nature and appeals to both natural history enthusiasts and lovers of period graphic design.
