Ancient naturalist plate of the Common Seal by Charles d'Orbigny

This reproduction of an ancient engraving illustrates the common seal (Phoca vitulina) in its natural habitat. The subject is depicted with great anatomical fidelity, resting on frozen ground in the foreground. In the background, the composition suggests a polar landscape composed of icebergs and seabirds, reinforcing the documentary dimension of this zoological study. Shades of gray and brown underline the realistic rendering of the animal's fur and shapes.

The original illustration belongs to Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, published between 1841 and 1849. This work is recognized for the exceptional quality of its engraved plates, which served as a scientific reference in the 19th century. The work bears witness to the colossal effort to synthesize the biological knowledge of the period, mixing direct observation and systematic classification of marine mammals.

This iconographic piece is aimed at collectors of naturalist themes and enthusiasts of the history of science. Its graphic strength and sober atmosphere make it an ideal decoration element for an office or a reading space. It allows one to appreciate the finesse of the stroke of past engravers while celebrating the fauna of northern regions.
