Ancient Naturalist Plate: Softshell and Green Turtles

This scientific reproduction features various species of turtles, notably the spiny softshell turtle and the green sea turtle. Taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this technical illustration focuses on the textures of the shells and the anatomical details of the reptiles. The hues of green, brown, and black faithfully reflect the original naturalist plates.

Published in the mid-19th century, this plate is part of an encyclopedic corpus aimed at cataloging all living things. The approach is that of a rigorous inventory where each line serves the morphological understanding of the species. d'Orbigny's work here is exemplary in its ability to transform herpetological observation into a high-precision graphic study.

This iconographic document is particularly suited for those interested in reptiles or the history of science. Its practical value lies in its ability to evoke the spirit of past scientific explorations, offering a piece of calm and erudite contemplation for any space dedicated to knowledge or historical decoration.
