This reproduction of an antique lithography depicts the famous Pompey's Pillar erected on the heights of Alexandria. The composition emphasizes the monumental verticality of the granite shaft, contrasting with the presence of human figures and a camel in the foreground, which give the scale of the building. The tones of beige, orange, and brown restore the warmth of Egyptian light on the archaeological remains.
Drawn by David Roberts upon his arrival in Egypt in 1838, this plate is an essential testimony of Alexandrian architecture. The column, actually dedicated to Diocletian, was one of the first monuments visible to travelers approaching by sea. Roberts captured the elegance of its Corinthian capital and its majestic isolation on the eminence dominating the ancient city.
Ideal for enthusiasts of classical architecture and Egyptian history, this illustration brings a scholarly dimension to any space. It allows one to collect an emblematic view of world heritage, treated with the documentary precision specific to the great 19th-century illustrators, fostering an immersion in Alexandria's prestigious past.
