Antique Botanical Illustration: Virginian Gyroselle by d'Orbigny

This reproduction illustrates the Virginian Gyroselle, a pink-flowered plant remarkable for its structural elegance. The naturalist plate carefully details the morphology of the petals, green leaves, and fruits. It is extracted from a major scientific iconographic set from the mid-19th century, favoring descriptive clarity and fidelity to the subject.

The image comes from the Universal Dictionary of Natural History, directed by Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849. This work is considered one of the most successful achievements in scientific popularization of the era. The original drawing, transposed here into a reproduction, reflects the academic aesthetics and meticulousness of the naturalist engravers who accompanied the scholars.

This iconographic document finds its place in an environment dedicated to the study or contemplation of nature. It offers a clear reading of the botanical specificities of the species while bringing a historical touch to a collection. It is an object of knowledge that enhances the heritage of the great expeditions and inventories of the past.
