Antique botanical plate Hydrangea by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

This reproduction of a botanical plate illustrates with remarkable precision the Hydrangea, from the famous collection Choix des plus belles fleurs. The work highlights a pink flower with delicate shades, surrounded by dense green leaves against a plain background. The composition testifies to the mastery of hand-colored lithography, capturing the texture of the bracts and the structure of the inflorescence.

The original was published in 1827 by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, a major figure in 19th-century naturalist illustration. This work aimed to bring together the most aesthetic species for an audience of amateurs and scholars. The Hydrangea, introduced to Europe from Asia, was then a plant of great prestige, particularly appreciated for its opulent flowering and chromatic variations.

This antique illustration lends itself to a collection of naturalist engravings or a documentary study of horticultural heritage. Its scientific rigor combined with its visual softness allows one to appreciate the evolution of botanical taxonomy. It offers historical testimony on the art of scholarly engraving and the passion for ornamental flora.
