This naturalistic plate reproduction features the peacock flower, or Tigridia Pavonia. The illustration highlights a bright orange flower with yellow-spotted petals, emphasizing the exotic and spectacular structure of this plant. Redouté's work is distinguished by rigorous observation of the stem and leaves, rendered through a subtle use of chromatic contrasts.
Taken from the 1827 publication Choix des plus belles fleurs, this work documents a species observed in Mexico since colonial times. Pierre-Joseph Redouté applies his talent as a lithographer to immortalize this rare plant in early 19th-century European gardens. Scientific precision combines with a refined aesthetic characteristic of the author's style.
Ideal for a collection of antique engravings, this illustration appeals to fans of botany and classical art. It allows one to appreciate the richness of exotic flora as it was represented in the major scientific and artistic treatises of the last century.
