Antique Botanical Plate: Sweet William by d'Orbigny

This reproduction of an antique engraving illustrates the sweet William, a floral species depicted here with great documentary rigor. Taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this naturalist plate details the pink inflorescence and the morphological characteristics of the plant. The graphic composition, typical of Charles d'Orbigny's works, alternates between the overall representation of the subject and precise anatomical analyses of the reproductive organs.

Published in the mid-19th century, this work fits into the tradition of major illustrated French encyclopedias. Under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny, engravers sought to restore the complexity of the plant world with remarkable line clarity. The style combines the demand of science and the finesse of lithographic art, making each plate a historical testimony of the botanical knowledge of the era.

This antique illustration lends itself particularly well to erudite and sober wall decoration. It will appeal to those who appreciate the charm of historical flower plates and the aesthetics of past scientific works. As a reproduction, it constitutes an accessible collectible object that enhances the naturalist heritage in a daily environment.
