This reproduction of an antique engraving precisely illustrates the ocellated skink, a reptile of the Scincidae family. The naturalist plate portrays the subject in its environment, highlighting the fineness of the scaly details and the characteristic posture of this lizard, taken from the original plates of the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle.
The original work was directed by Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849, fitting into the golden age of 19th-century scientific illustration. The composition reflects an encyclopedic desire to catalogue the biological world with remarkable artistic and documentary rigor for the time, combining precise observation with careful chromatic rendering.
This naturalist illustration is aimed at herpetology enthusiasts and lovers of cabinet of curiosities objects. It finds its place in a collection of scientific reproductions or as a sober decorative element, inviting contemplation of ancient terrestrial fauna through the prism of the history of science.
