Antique engraving of Oleander (Nerium Oleander) by Redouté (1827)

This reproduction of an 1827 naturalist plate depicts the Oleander (Nerium oleander), an iconic shrub of the Mediterranean basin. The illustration captures the brilliance of the flowers and the tough appearance of the foliage with great strength of line. Taken from Pierre-Joseph Redouté's collection Choix des plus belles fleurs, this work highlights the complex structure of this plant from the Apocynaceae family through a balanced composition.

The editorial context of this engraving reflects 19th-century fascination with southern flora. Redouté describes a shrub whose flowering served as a visual landmark in the ravines of Andalusia. His scientific intent is evident in the precision of the flower rendering, despite the species' known toxicity. Redouté's graphic style harmoniously combines botanical realism with visual elegance.

Intended for lovers of naturalist decor and Mediterranean history, this reproduction is a first-rate iconographic document. It allows one to appreciate the richness of last century's French botanical catalog. Its presence invites the contemplation of wild nature while bringing a historical and scholarly dimension to a floral art collection.
