This reproduction of a naturalist plate illustrates Licuala Spinosa, a remarkable palm native to Southeast Asia. The drawing highlights the peculiarity of its pleated fan-shaped leaves and spiny trunk. This chromatic study allows one to appreciate the shades of green and the complex structure of the foliar segments, characteristics of this species from the Malay Peninsula and the island of Java.
The original plate appears in the reference work "Palmiers, histoire iconographique" by Oswald de Kerchove de Denterghem, published in 1878. Illustrator P. De Pannemaker deploys his technical mastery to render the texture of the petioles and the geometry of the fronds. This monograph constitutes an important milestone in 19th-century horticulture and botanical systematics, combining scientific rigor and graphic elegance.
This ancient image constitutes a testimony to the European fascination for tropical species. It lends itself to careful observation of botanical details and can be used as a decorative element to enhance a scientific heritage. Its balanced composition makes it a central piece for a collection of encyclopedic illustrations.
