Antique engraving The Great Senju Bridge — Utagawa Hiroshige

This print reproduction presents the Great Senju Bridge crossing the Ara-kawa River. The composition highlights the robust wooden structure of the bridge, animated by the passage of travelers, riders, and palanquins. The landscape is completed by a deep blue river where timber rafts and cargo boats circulate, bordered by a fishing village and dense vegetation.

Dated February 1856, this artwork is among the earliest plates in the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" series. Originally erected in 1594, this bridge was a strategic crossing point on the Ōshū Kaidō road, used by the shogun. Hiroshige here immortalizes the architectural durability of the site, capable of resisting floods, while defining the territorial limits of the city of Edo through his art.

A true study of civil engineering and social life, this illustration fits perfectly into a thematic collection on ancient infrastructure. The clarity of the drawing and the precision of the documentary details make it an ideal object of contemplation to appreciate the graphic rigor of ukiyo-e and the vitality of trade exchanges of the era.
