Antique illustration of the Pass of Thermopylae by Edward Dodwell

This reproduction of an engraving by Edward Dodwell depicts the famous Pass of Thermopylae, seen from Locris Hypocnemidia. The composition stages the monumentality of the landscape, with Mount Knenis on the left and the imposing mass of Mount Oeta in the background. The artist captured the light of the setting sun, casting long shadows across the plain, creating an atmosphere that is both grandiose and solemn, typical of an early 19th-century topographical study.

Taken from the work Views in Greece (1821), this plate is the result of Edward Dodwell's travels in Greece in the early 19th century. His approach combines quasi-archaeological rigor and artistic sensitivity, aiming to document the condition of landscapes and ancient vestiges. This view of Thermopylae is a precious testimony to the romantic perception of historical sites.

This print is intended for lovers of ancient history, travel writing, and classical landscapes. It constitutes a choice piece for a collection dedicated to Greece or scientific illustration, inviting contemplation of a mythical place immortalized through the eye of an explorer.
