Antique Japanese Print: Futago Islands at Matsushima

This reproduction of a Japanese print illustrates the Futago Islands in Matsushima, captured through the eyes of Hasui Kawase. The nocturnal scene reveals a maritime landscape dominated by shades of blue and gray, where the moon breaks through a cloudy sky. Two silhouettes are observed in a traditional boat, navigating near rocky islets topped with pine trees. The chromatic composition favors a melancholic depth specific to the landscapes of the Shin-hanga movement.

Hasui Kawase is a central figure in the renaissance of the Japanese print in the 20th century. This work testifies to his intention to document the serenity of Japanese landscapes by integrating modern lighting effects into the centuries-old woodblock printing technique. The attention paid to reflections on the water and cloudy textures highlights the transition between classical craftsmanship and a renewed pictorial sensibility.

This naturalist plate is intended for lovers of Japanese art and collectors of landscape iconography. Its calm atmosphere makes it a subject conducive to detailed observation or sober integration into interior decoration. It constitutes a precious visual testimony of Japan's poetic geography.
