Antique Naturalist Illustration of Malabar Spinach by Charles d'Orbigny

This careful reproduction presents a naturalist plate dedicated to Malabar spinach (Basella rubra), from the iconographic collections of the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle. The illustration offers a precise look at the plant's development, detailing the fleshy texture of the leaves, the delicacy of the flowers, and the globular appearance of the dark berries. The composition respects the codes of 19th-century scientific drawing, combining didactic clarity and visual balance.

The original work was carried out under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849, a prosperous period for French encyclopedic publishing. This print bears witness to the monumental effort of classifying botanical species at a time when science sought to list all living things. The graphic style is distinguished by its technical precision and chromatic fidelity to the observed natural models.

Intended for lovers of botany and historical objects, this reproduction integrates perfectly into a collection of naturalist studies. It lends itself ideally to being highlighted in a frame, allowing one to contemplate the richness of European scientific heritage. This plate constitutes a lasting testimony to the history of natural sciences.
