This reproduction of a naturalist plate comes from the famous Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle directed by Charles d'Orbigny. It illustrates with remarkable precision the horned corydalus (Corydalis cornutus), a fascinating neuropteran insect, represented here with its distinctive anatomical characteristics and original scientific captions.
The composition work and fineness of the stroke testify to the excellence of 19th-century scientific illustration. The original work, published between 1841 and 1849, aimed for a rigorous synthesis of the zoological knowledge of the time, combining the aesthetics of drawing with the documentary precision necessary for naturalists and researchers.
Ideal for enriching a collection of entomological studies or for bringing a touch of erudition to a cabinet of curiosities, this antique illustration celebrates the history of biology. It invites patient observation of the complex structures of the living world through the encyclopedic gaze of its authors.
