This reproduction of an antique engraving illustrates the China Aster (Aster Sinensis), extracted from the 1827 work Choix des plus belles fleurs. The plate features purple and pink flowers with contrasting yellow centers. The iconographic analysis reveals a great mastery of floral composition, where each petal is rendered with exemplary fidelity to life.
The author, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, nicknamed the "Raphael of flowers", demonstrates here his talent for documenting exotic species acclimatized in France. Native to China and Japan, this plant was introduced to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris around 1728. The engraving captures the horticultural evolution of the species, moving from simple forms to complex colored varieties.
Ideal for lovers of natural history, this reproduction brings a touch of classic elegance to any interior. It allows one to appreciate the finesse of a master illustrator's stroke while celebrating the horticultural diversity of an era turned towards discovery and scientific classification.
