Antique Naturalistic Plate: Mackerel and Swordfish

This reproduction of an antique illustration features two iconic marine species: the chub mackerel and the common swordfish. Taken from the famous Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this plate is distinguished by remarkable line finesse and a page layout typical of 19th-century ichthyological studies. The composition presents the specimens in profile, allowing detailed observation of their morphology and anatomical characteristics.

The original work was created under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849, a pivotal period for French scientific illustration. This plate is part of a universal synthesis approach aimed at cataloging and popularizing the diversity of the biological world. The graphic style, specific to the engravers of the era, combines scientific rigor and artistic elegance, testifying to an era when the encyclopedia represented the peak of shared knowledge.

This naturalistic plate is aimed at marine biology enthusiasts and lovers of heritage scientific images. As a decorative object, it brings a note that is both sober and erudite, fitting ideally into a cabinet of curiosities or a vintage-style interior. Its documentary character and timeless aesthetic invite the rediscovery of the richness of aquatic fauna through the historical prism of natural history.
