This reproduction of a 19th-century ornithological illustration presents two aquatic birds: Baillon's Crake and the Common Loon. The fine line of the engraving faithfully restores the plumage and silhouettes of these species, offering a balanced chromatic study between brown, gray, and white hues.

The original document comes from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, a major work by Charles d'Orbigny published in the 1840s. This scientific synthesis work illustrates the period's desire to catalog and popularize biological diversity through iconography of high technical and artistic standard.

This antique plate is aimed at ornithology enthusiasts and collectors of naturalist images. It offers an erudite testimony on 19th-century bird classification and brings a documentary and historical dimension to a collection of period reproductions.
