Antique plate: Colossal statue at the Temple of Luxor by David Roberts

This reproduction features one of the colossal statues located at the entrance to the Luxor Temple. The antique illustration by David Roberts emphasizes the monumental scale of the sculptures of Ramesses II, dominating the temple portico. A few figures in the foreground allow the viewer to grasp the immensity of the site. The strength of the line and the hierarchy of architectural elements bear witness to the grandeur of the ancient city of Thebes as it appeared to 19th-century travelers.

The artwork is extracted from the famous 1838 series of lithographs dedicated to Egypt and Nubia. David Roberts deployed all his talent as an architectural draftsman to render the texture of granite and the eroded details of the pharaonic monuments. The shades of sand, red, and blue create a balanced chromatic study, representative of Orientalist aesthetics and Europe's growing interest in Egyptian archaeology.

Intended for lovers of classical art and ancient history, this print constitutes a choice piece for a thematic collection. It is observed as a testimony to the persistence of monumental structures across millennia. In decoration, this antique plate brings a touch of historical nobility and sculptural presence, enhancing the universal artistic heritage.
