Taken from the famous Recueil des cartes des côtes maritimes du Royaume published in 1680, this work was produced by the engineer Louis-Nicolas de Clerville under the impetus of Jean-Baptiste Colbert. The graphic style reflects the documentary requirement of the era, combining military utility and scientific rigor to inventory the strategic resources of the French coastline under the reign of Louis XIV, with particular attention paid to shallow waters and channels.
