This reproduction of a plate by Edward Dodwell offers a majestic view of Mount Olympus, captured from the plain of Thessaly. The artist has composed a powerful image where the gigantic mass of the mythical mountain dominates the horizon. The foreground, formed by the hills of Mount Ossa, serves to accentuate the perspective and grandeur of the landscape, in a style characteristic of the topographical studies of the period.
Taken from the work Views in Greece (1821), this engraving is emblematic of Edward Dodwell's project: to document the most famous places in Greece. Mount Olympus, home of the gods, is treated here with geographical precision that does not exclude a sublime dimension. This illustration is a historical document on the perception of mythological landscapes at the beginning of the 19th century.
This print is aimed at enthusiasts of Greek mythology, lovers of grandiose landscapes, and collectors of travel illustrations. It constitutes a strong decorative element, capable of evoking the power of nature and the richness of the classical imagination.
