Antique Print: Chuzenji Temple in Utagahama by Hasui Kawase

This illustration reproduction depicts the Chuzenji Temple in Utagahama. The visual centers around an imposing red torii located at the water's edge, flanked by a stone statue and dense vegetation in shades of green. In the background, boats sail on the lake in front of hills fading into tones of gray and blue. The chromatic structure emphasizes the contrast between the architectural elements and the wild nature.

Through this work, Hasui Kawase continues his exploration of Japan's spiritual places. The engraving bears witness to a desire to capture the harmony between the sacred and the surrounding landscape. The artist uses deep perspective to guide the viewer's gaze from the wooded foreground to the distant horizon, respecting the codes of traditional landscape printmaking while modernizing the treatment of shadows.

Intended for lovers of religious and natural iconography, this reproduction allows one to appreciate the serenity of Japanese lake sites. It can be integrated into a collection of naturalist plates or used to illustrate the diversity of Japanese landscapes. Its documentary value makes it a subject of contemplation rich in symbolism.
