Antique print: Evening in Beppu by Hasui Kawase

This faithful reproduction presents a landscape plate by Hasui Kawase entitled Evening in Beppu. The illustration captures a twilight moment on a paved road, where a bare tree stands out against a sky with orange and blue hues. The composition guides the gaze towards illuminated dwellings, creating a balanced chromatic study between the shadow of the hills and the artificial light of the homes.

A major artist of the Shin-hanga movement, Kawase infuses this work with a melancholic and factual dimension, characteristic of his explorations of Japanese provinces. The attention to detail in rendering textures — from stone to the wood of structures — bears witness to the technical excellence of the era. This print is a precious testimony to the aesthetics of the Japanese landscape at the beginning of the Showa era.

This antique illustration is aimed at those who appreciate nocturnal atmospheres and the calm of rural landscapes. Ideal for a documentary collection or to brighten up a living space, this reproduction allows one to contemplate the perfect balance between nature and human presence.
