This reproduction of a Japanese print by Hasui Kawase illustrates Zaimoku Island located in Matsushima. The scene highlights a sailing boat navigating under an imposing natural rock arch. The precise lines of the Shin-hanga movement emphasize the blue nuances of the water and the pinkish hues of the sky, creating a balanced maritime composition.
Hasui Kawase, a major figure in the 20th-century ukiyo-e revival, is distinguished by his ability to capture Japan's landscapes with a melancholic and serene atmosphere. This plate testifies to his interest in picturesque sites and changing light on mineral and aquatic elements.
This ancient illustration integrates perfectly into a collection dedicated to Japanese art or classical maritime landscapes. It offers a historical perspective on the representation of Japanese nature and can be observed for the finesse of its geological details.
