Artistic Plate: Rain at Shinobazu Pond by Hasui Kawase

This Japanese print reproduction features Shinobazu Pond during a downpour, as seen by Hasui Kawase. The composition stages weeping willows in green shades framing the view of a temple with a red roof. In the foreground, silhouettes equipped with umbrellas walk along a wet path, while the sky and water merge into shades of gray and blue. The work captures a snapshot of urban life in contact with nature.

This recurring subject in Kawase's work illustrates the Shin-hanga movement's interest in climatic atmospheres and iconic locations in Tokyo. The artistic intention is based on a precise chromatic study of rain and its effects on color perception. The contrast between the red of the temple and the dominant gray-green reinforces the visual hierarchy of the plate.

This illustration lends itself to a collection centered on ukiyo-e art or urban botanical landscapes. Its descriptive character and accuracy of tone make it an interesting object of study for graphic design enthusiasts. It brings a historical and documentary dimension to any space of contemplation or work.
