This reproduction of a naturalist illustration brings together two avian specimens: the Sapphire Hummingbird (Ornismya Sapho) and the stout Kingfisher (Dacelo concreta). The plate, taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, presents these birds perched on branches. The varied colors, ranging from emerald green to red, bear witness to the chromatic richness and diversity of the tropical fauna represented in the work.
Under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny, this 19th-century work aimed to catalog global biological diversity. The engraving stands out for the fineness of its line and the precision of anatomical details, characteristics of academic ornithological illustration. The contrast between the tiny silhouette of the hummingbird and the robust stature of the kingfisher creates a balanced and instructive scientific composition.
This antique poster constitutes a medium for the study of exotic species or to complete a collection of historical engravings. Its documentary dimension and scientific rigor make it an object of contemplation for ornithology enthusiasts. It fits into wall decoration dedicated to the history of science and the discovery of the living world.
