Botanical Illustration of Sweet Potato (いも) by Kōno Bairei

This art reproduction presents a botanical plate by Japanese artist Kōno Bairei, dedicated to the sweet potato. The illustration features the tuber with its fine roots and a young green leaf, in a style that is both simple and precise. The color treatment, with shades of purple and beige, emphasizes the organic shapes of the plant against a neutral background, focusing attention on the subject.

This work is part of the tradition of scientific and naturalist illustration that flourished in Japan during the Meiji era. Kōno Bairei, master of the kachō-ga genre, demonstrates here his ability to transcend the ordinary. By choosing a subject as humble as a sweet potato, he elevates it to the rank of an aesthetic study subject, celebrating beauty in the simplest forms of nature.

This plate will interest lovers of botanical drawing, collectors of Japanese art, and those who appreciate still lifes. In decoration, this illustration brings a touch of originality and rustic charm, particularly suited to a kitchen, a dining room, or a cabinet of curiosities.
