This reproduction shows a climbing plant of the winged passionflower, characterized by its spectacular red flower and pendant fruits. The naturalistic plate includes anatomical details of the flower, revealing the complexity of its internal structure. The composition emphasizes the dynamism of the stems and the richness of the colors, offering a complete vision of the life cycle and morphology of this exotic species.
From the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle by Charles d'Orbigny (1841-1849), this engraving is a witness to the 19th-century craze for tropical flora. The illustrators of this dictionary sought to document species with encyclopedic precision, making each plate a precious visual archive. The finesse of the line reflects the expertise of the engravers working under d'Orbigny's direction.
Intended for lovers of rare plants and ancient engravings, this illustration brings a historical and scholarly dimension to any space. It is ideal for composing a thematic wall gallery or for enriching a collection of natural history art. The winged passionflower, through its exoticism and graphic complexity, constitutes a privileged subject of contemplation for natural science enthusiasts.
