Botanical Plate Spaendoncea Tamarindifolia by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

This reproduction presents Spaendoncea Tamarindifolia, a small shrub of the legume family native to the Arabian Peninsula. The illustration highlights the pale pink flowers and the pinnate foliage characteristic of the species. The stroke, of great sureness, carefully details the arrangement of the leaves and the structure of the stems, offering a clear and analytical vision of this exotic plant as studied by 19th-century botanists.

The image comes from the collection Choix des plus belles fleurs (1827) by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. This subject possesses a particular historical dimension, the genus Spaendoncea having been named in homage to the painter Gérard van Spaendonck before being recognized as a synonym of the genus Cadia. This plate thus bears witness to the debates and evolution of botanical nomenclature at a time when the classification of species was undergoing major scientific upheavals.

This documentary piece is ideal for enthusiasts of natural history and botanical travels. Its value lies as much in its graphic precision as in the scholarly context it represents. It will find its place in an interior seeking to evoke the spirit of cabinets of curiosities or the rigorous aesthetics of ancient scientific expeditions.
