This reproduction of a scientific plate gathers several studies of ships observed in Batavia, on the island of Java. It features a Chinese prahu from Java as well as a traditional Javanese boat, highlighting the coexistence of Asian and local maritime influences in this major 19th-century port.
Published as part of Jules Dumont d'Urville's work on the voyage of the Astrolabe (1826–1829), this illustration is the result of François Edmond Pâris's observations. The approach is strictly documentary, aiming to inventory the diversity of hull shapes and riggings encountered during the stopover in Java.
This historical illustration constitutes a visual testimony of maritime cultural blending in Indonesia. It is perfectly suited for a naval art collection or wall decoration focused on the history of Eastern ports and scientific exploration.
