This faithful reproduction highlights the Cystopteris fragilis fern, captured by Anna Atkins using the cyanotype process. The illustration details the lace of the fronds and the characteristic silhouette of this British fern. The whiteness of the plant tracing contrasts with the intense blue background, offering both a scientific and dreamlike vision of this iconic species of temperate landscapes.
Produced between 1843 and 1853, this plate is part of the scientific inventory work conducted by Atkins for her book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. As a pioneer, she knew how to use photographic chemistry to serve botany, producing images of unmatched precision for the time. Her heritage lies at the crossroads of visual experimentation and encyclopedism.
The graphic elegance of this fern makes it an ideal piece for naturalist-inspired decoration. It allows one to rediscover the beauty of plant structures through a historical medium, perfectly suited for a wall exhibition dedicated to antique herbariums and primitive photography.
