En Méditerranée by Messageries Maritimes – Vintage Plate

This travel poster reproduction, titled "En Méditerranée par les Messageries Maritimes", is a work by Navy painter Gilbert Galland dating from 1920. The illustration depicts a port view at twilight, featuring traditional sailboats alongside the characteristic architecture of a Mediterranean city with silhouetted minarets. The orange tones of sunset contrast with the blue shadows of the port.

The original work aimed to promote transatlantic maritime connections and the exoticism of the destinations served. Gilbert Galland uses a descriptive and evocative style here, favoring atmospheric depth and color richness to convey the spirit of maritime travel in the early 20th century. This composition bears witness to the encyclopedic intention to document the landscapes of the Levant for the European public.

This antique plate lends itself perfectly to a chromatic study of historical maritime landscapes. It constitutes a precious document for collectors of tourism imagery and maritime history enthusiasts. Its contemplation allows one to rediscover the refined aesthetics of the major transport companies of the Art Deco era, ideal for refined thematic decoration.
