Entomology plate: Scarites polyphemus - Charles d'Orbigny

This reproduction presents a detailed entomology plate dedicated to the Scarites polyphemus and several other beetle species. The illustration highlights the precise morphology of the insects, accompanied by anatomical diagrams allowing for the observation of the complex structures of their mandibles and limbs. The whole is extracted from the famous naturalist corpus directed by Charles d'Orbigny.

The original work is part of the 19th-century scientific aesthetic, a period marked by a colossal effort of classification and documentation of the living world. This engraving testifies to the rigor of naturalist observation of the era, combining technical precision and visual harmony thanks to a palette of browns, greens, and ochres characteristic of the plates in d'Orbigny's work.

This ancient illustration lends itself particularly well to a collection of naturalist plates or to a sober and erudite interior decoration. It allows one to contemplate the fascinating diversity of the insect world through the eyes of a mid-19th-century scientist, thus offering a historical and aesthetic perspective on classical entomology.
