Fan-shaped butterfly illustration by Kamisaka Sekka

This graphic plate features two butterflies whose wings are stylized to evoke the shape of traditional Japanese fans or parasols. The colors used—blue, green, and purple—are applied in sharp flat areas on a beige background, highlighting the rigorous geometry of the composition. The work is taken from the collection Chō senshu (1903), a major reference in the study of Japanese decorative motifs.

Kamisaka Sekka uses the butterfly theme here to explore the limits of ornamental abstraction. Inspired by the Rimpa movement, he reinterprets natural elements through geometric shapes and saturated colors. This technique aimed to create models applicable to applied arts, fusing the observation of fauna with Japan's age-old decorative traditions while foreshadowing modern graphic design.

This reproduction offers strong iconographic value, ideal for lovers of Japanese prints and historical design. The strength of the chromatic contrasts and the originality of the wing stylization make it a central piece for a collection dedicated to Meiji era art. It accurately illustrates the transition between classical art and the beginnings of contemporary design.
