Fish Plate: Common Pandora and Common Picarel by Charles d'Orbigny

This scientific illustration reproduction presents two marine species: the Common Pandora (Sparus erythrinus) and the Common Picarel (Sparus Smaris). Taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this naturalist plate highlights the fineness of the scales and the grey and pink chromatic nuances. The composition offers a precise profile view, complemented by detailed anatomical studies of the head in the upper part.

Published between 1841 and 1849, d'Orbigny's work represents the peak of 19th-century encyclopedic illustration. The line work, characteristic of the steel engravings of the era, combines taxonomic rigor with classical aesthetics. The initial intention was to catalog biodiversity with absolute fidelity, participating in the popularization of ichthyological knowledge among the general public and scholars.

Intended for lovers of natural history and science, this ancient plate fits into a collection of thematic engravings. It can be observed for its documentary value or used as a sober decorative element in a study. Its contemplation invites the rediscovery of the richness of the seabed through the naturalist and scientific prism of the last century.
