Fish plate: Meyer's Butterflyfish and Cape Dipterodon - d'Orbigny

This reproduction of an ichthyological plate highlights Meyer's Butterflyfish (Chelodon Meyerii) and the Cape Dipterodon (Dipterodon capensis). The illustration, taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, details the geometric patterns and morphology of these fish. Additional views of the buccal apparatus enrich the visual description, offering precise technical analysis typical of 19th-century scientific studies.

Charles d'Orbigny supervised this monumental publication between 1841 and 1849, marking the history of naturalist iconography. The engraving emphasizes the hierarchy of elements and the precision of technical drawing, essential for taxonomic classification. The shades of yellow, black, and gray scrupulously respect the observations made by explorers and scientists of the era.

This historical document is aimed at collectors of marine themes and enthusiasts of the history of science. In decoration, this antique fish plate brings a dimension of academic rigor and encyclopedic curiosity. It allows one to observe the diversity of aquatic species through a major work of French biological synthesis.
