This antique illustration reproduction comes from the work Chō senshu, a major work by artist Kamisaka Sekka dating from 1903. The plate illustrates a cloud of stylized butterflies scattered loosely. The specimens, depicted in shades of grey and yellow, are devoid of complex patterns, emphasizing the purity of their shapes and lines.

The artist, a central figure of the Rimpa school, offers a poetic and naturalistic interpretation of the movement here. The random arrangement of the insects against the cream background evokes a mastered spatial dynamic, typical of Japanese decorative art. This print reflects the balance between observation of nature and graphic stylization.

Intended for lovers of Japanese art and naturalistic motifs, this plate testifies to the formal elegance of the Meiji era. It allows one to appreciate the finesse of the line and the subtle hierarchy of elements within this airy composition.
