This reproduction of an antique herpetological plate features the grass snake as well as the nasal dryine. The illustration comes from the prestigious Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle and exposes these reptiles with a documentary rigor typical of 19th-century scholarly plates.
Charles d'Orbigny's work aimed to offer a perfect visual synthesis of nature. A careful chromatic study is observed here where shades of green and brown serve the legibility of scales and forms, testifying to the expertise of the illustrators and engravers who contributed to this monumental encyclopedic work.
Intended for collectors of antique prints and reptile enthusiasts, this plate constitutes a study medium as well as a refined decoration element. It allows the rediscovery of the gaze cast by past naturalists on reptilian biodiversity.
