Herpetological Plate: Javan File Snake and Banded Sea Krait

This reproduction of an antique herpetological plate presents two snake specimens: the Javan file snake (Acrochordus javanicus) and the banded sea krait (Platurus fasciatus). The illustration is distinguished by a precise chromatic study blending shades of green, yellow, and black, emphasizing the particular texture of the scales. This naturalist plate demonstrates a desire to faithfully represent living creatures for scientific identification purposes in the 19th century.

Taken from the famous Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle edited by Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849, this engraving illustrates the excellence of the scientific iconography of the era. The composition portrays the reptiles in dynamic postures, typical of the naturalist style that combined academic rigor with elegant lines. The original work served as a reference for popularizing major zoological knowledge among scholars and the literate public.

Ideal for herpetology enthusiasts or collectors of antique prints, this reproduction brings a historical and scholarly dimension to any interior. It allows for a detailed observation of ophidian morphology while appreciating the charm of exceptional encyclopedic documentation. This piece integrates harmoniously into a cabinet of curiosities decoration or a space dedicated to the study of nature.
